Defenders order by Price - £8.0 -> £5.5

At the absolute top of the pricing list sits a player in a tier of his own: Gabriel (Arsenal). Priced at a premium £8.0m, he is £1.5m more expensive than any other defender in the game.

Is He Worth the Historic Price Tag?

While £8.0m might seem steep, the data shows he is priced perfectly. Last season, Gabriel started at £6.0m and ended the campaign at £7.3m, racking up a massive 209 points. By the end of the season, he was virtually essential due to his guaranteed minutes, serious aerial goal threat, and key role in an Arsenal defensive unit that kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League.

The Verdict: Gabriel is an absolute lock for guaranteed points. However, fitting him into your squad is a structural question: can you afford an £8.0m defender if you are already committed to premium assets like Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m)? If you can make the budget work, he is worth every penny.

🛑 The 6.5m Bracket: Premium Traps & Wait-and-Sees

In the £6.5m tier, the FPL Cheat Sheet model urges extreme caution.

Jurrien Timber (Arsenal): Currently out injured and will not play Gameweek 1. His absence, however, opens up incredible bargain routes elsewhere in the Arsenal defense.
Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool): Last year’s 175-point campaign was stellar. He remains an elite, nailed-on aerial threat. However, with an average expected points of 4.37 xP, the model suggests he is good, but not elite enough to justify the £6.5m price tag when cheaper alternatives offer similar output.
O'Reilly (Manchester City): Boasts a massive 5.23 average xP (second only to Gabriel). However, under Manchester City's new manager Enzo Maresca, the lineup is highly unpredictable. With an estimated xStart% of only 53%, O'Reilly is currently too big of a rotation risk.

The Verdict: Avoid this bracket for Gameweek 1. Wait and see on O'Reilly until we get more clarity on Maresca's tactical preferences.

🔒 The 6.0m Bracket: Ripples of Injury & The Ultimate Lock

The defensive landscape in the £6.0m tier has been completely shaken up by pre-season injuries.

The Saliba Injury Ripple Effect

Arsenal's star center-back William Saliba is injured and ruled out. This creates a fascinating tactical dilemma: will Gabriel's defensive returns suffer without his trusted partner? More importantly, who steps in to fill the void at a cheaper price?

Manchester City and Transfer Analyses

Guéhi (£6.0m, 53% xStart%, 4.82 average xP): High upside, but carries the same Maresca rotation warning as O'Reilly. Avoid for now.
Maxence Lacroix (£6.0m, 90% xStart%, 4.64 average xP): Having transferred from Crystal Palace to Chelsea, Lacroix is a locked starter. He was brilliant at Palace and moves to a Chelsea side with high clean sheet potential. While a new club always carries transition risk, the model rates him as a great, aggressive pick.
Marcos Senesi (£6.0m, 40% xStart%, 4.37 average xP): Moved from Bournemouth to Tottenham. Senesi was superb last year, but Tottenham struggled defensively. Combined with a low 40% xStart%, we recommend a strict avoid.

🌟 The £6.0m Lock: James Tarkowski (Everton)

If you want absolute security and elite value at £6.0m, look no further than James Tarkowski.

Tarkowski scored 170 points last season. He is a guaranteed 90-minute starter, a magnet for defensive contributions (def-cons), and the primary aerial target in a defensively rigid Sean Dyche team. At under 10% ownership, he is a phenomenal, secure lock.

💎 The 5.5m Bracket: Gvardiol Gambles & The Arsenal Bargain

The £5.5m segment is packed with options, but our model highlights two standout stories.

1. Josko Gvardiol & Rúben Dias (Manchester City)

Gvardiol (£5.5m, 71% xStart%, 4.75 average xP)
Rúben Dias (£5.5m, 78% xStart%, 4.28 average xP)

If you absolutely must gamble on a Manchester City defender to start the season, Gvardiol has the highest attacking upside and expected points. However, we advise caution: Maresca's "Pep Roulette" is real, and City defenders carry high rotation risk early on.

2. 🚀 The Bargain Route: Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal)

With William Saliba injured, Riccardo Calafiori (£5.5m) is primed to step directly into Arsenal's starting eleven.

Calafiori boasts a superb 4.51 average xP and a locked-in 90% xStart%. For £5.5m, he represents an incredibly cheap entry point into the best defense in the league. (Note: Stay away from fellow Arsenal options Hincapié and Mosquera, who do not offer the same security).

Other Notable £5.5m Picks:

Daniel Muñoz (Crystal Palace, £5.5m, 90% xStart%, 4.21 average xP): An incredibly attacking wing-back. Palace will still keep clean sheets even after Lacroix's departure.
Adrien Truffert (Bournemouth, £5.5m, 90% xStart%, 4.00 average xP): Extremely reliable starter with a decent fixture run.
Nathan Collins (Brentford, 3.84 xP) and Murillo (Nottingham Forest, 3.84 xP) are also stable £5.5m starters.

Defenders continues £5.5 -> £5.0

🎯 The 5.0m Bracket: Elite Algorithmic Differentials

The £5.0m tier is where savvy managers can gain a massive advantage over the template.

👑 The Megapick: Canvot (Crystal Palace)

When Maxence Lacroix left Crystal Palace for Chelsea, it paved a direct path into the starting lineup for Canvot (£5.0m).

Last season, Canvot picked up 72 points in just 14 starts. Now, with a locked 90% xStart% and a massive 4.27 average xP, he is an elite asset. Why pay £5.5m for Muñoz when you can get Canvot for £5.0m? Best of all, his ownership (TSB%) is a microscopic 0.6%. He is the ultimate Gameweek 1 differential.

Alternative: Chris Richards (£5.0m, 90% xStart%, 4.18 average xP) is another excellent, secure route into Palace's defensive block.

More £5.0m Picks:

Ballard (Sunderland, £5.0m, 90% xStart%, 3.90 average xP): A nailed-on starter. Sunderland have an outstanding opening fixture run starting with Ipswich (away) and Fulham (home). Why pay £5.5m for Sunderland's Mukiele when Ballard is £0.5m cheaper for similar expected output?
The Brighton Dilemma: Mats Wieffer (£5.0m, 59% xStart%, 3.95 average xP) has great underlying numbers. However, Brighton have made a flurry of defensive signings (including Vuskovic, Kadıoğlu, Costinha, and De Cuyper). We advise avoiding Brighton's defense entirely until the starting eleven crystallizes.
Manchester United: Harry Maguire (£5.0m, 90% xStart%, 3.41 average xP) and Diogo Dalot (£5.0m, 90% xStart%, 3.36 average xP) are solid, but United's true value lies in the £4.5m bracket.

🧱 The 4.5m Bracket: Nailed-On Budget Enablers

To afford Haaland and Bruno, you need reliable enablers at £4.5m. Our model has identified the gold standards and exposed the trap players.

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham, £4.5m, 53% xStart%, 3.99 average xP): While his xP looks tempting, his actual minutes on the pitch are highly volatile due to rotation and injury history. Do not buy into the pre-season hype; if you pick him, prepare to benched.
Axel Disasi (Chelsea, £4.5m, 0% xStart%): Stay far away. He is not in line to start.

🛡️ The Top FPL Cheat Sheet £4.5m Enablers

These two players are locked-in starters with exceptional value:

Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest, £4.5m, 90% xStart%, 3.53 average xP): Expected to start every game at wing-back. At £4.5m, he is far superior value to teammate Nico Williams (£5.0m) for virtually identical expected points.
Mitchell (Crystal Palace, £4.5m, 90% xStart%, 3.51 average xP): The absolute cheapest starting route into Oliver Glasner's highly-rated Palace defense.

Other Nailed £4.5m Targets:

Luke Shaw (Manchester United, £4.5m, 90% xStart%, 2.93 average xP): Under Michael Carrick, Shaw is expected to hold down the left-back spot. He is the single best route into the United defense. (Note: Mazraoui at £4.5m is also cheap but currently sits at just a 34% expected start rate).
Vitalii Mykolenko (Everton, 3.13 average xP)
Kayode (Brentford, 3.05 average xP)
Joe Rodon (Leeds, 3.02 average xP)

If you are looking for a £4.0m defender, you must target the newly promoted clubs (Coventry, Ipswich, Hull) to find guaranteed minutes.
